Civil War Day at Shippen

Sunday, November 14, 2021 -
11:00am to 4:00pm

Shippen Manor hosts Co. F of the 27th Regiment ("Bailey's Boys") for an on-site Winter Civil War Day! Company F will be on the east lawn of the Manor, resting from their long travels. The men will have two firing demonstrations for our visitors, at 12pm and 3pm.

In addition to visiting the soldiers and learning more about their experiences during the war, visitors can also stop by the tent(s) of the 27th's field hospital.

Museum Tours
The Friends of Shippen will be providing Porch Tours on the boardwalk, near the museum entrances that are along the upper driveway.  Porch tours will be paused during the firing demonstrations and will resume after they have been completed (about 30 minutes each).

The interior of the Manor is not open to the public this year. Come and see our window decorations on the boardwalk side of the Manor.

Children's Activity (1:30-3pm): "Civil War Ciphers"
During the Civil War, ciphers were a way to code messages so that if they fell into the wrong hands, they could not be deciphered. Today, from 1:30 to 3pm, join our museum director outside of the office porch (along the upper driveway) in a guided activity with the kids.  This is a free activity.

Oxford Furnace
Although we do not have enough interpreters to also speak with visitors at the Furnace, you are welcome to venture down (Cinder Street and Washington Ave., next to the Oxford Colonial Methodist Church) and take a look. There is a fence surrounding the Furnace to protect it, but you can certainly see through it.

Additional Information
The Manor has limited parking. Accessible parking at the end of the boardwalk nearest Belvidere Avenue. We have two accessible parking spots nearest the boardwalk.
Our back lot will be closed for this event.

There is additional on-street parking on Washington Ave. (past the stone church), Wall Street (please pay attention to parking signs), and the Oxford municipal lot off Allen Ave (by In the Nick of Time Tailors).  Please do not block driveways or park on Washington Ave. at the bottom of the hill from the Manor. Violators may be ticketed by the local police.
If your dog(s) is accompanying you, please make sure they are on-leash at all times (as per Warren County Parks rules). We thank you in advance for picking up after your pets.

This is a family-friendly historic site. This is a free event.

Shippen Manor is a part of the Warren County Parks System and is an alcohol, drug and tobacco-free site.
